We ate the watermelons and then sat on the logs by the fire. At the end of the day all the kids came together and sang songs while the camp leaders played guitar and harmonica.

Another possible explanation is that the campfire was warmer than the woods and no one wanted to stay out in the dark air while the animals were all making strange noises.
